Caring for your new teak furniture

Your new teak furniture has been supplied with a smooth to the touch, fine-sanded finish. You can simply leave it to weather naturally or apply one of our teak care products depending on your preference.

Teak is a natural product which may vary in shade from light to dark brown. Any colour variations will gradually even out if left outdoors. Leaving your furniture to weather naturally means that it will gradually develop a silver-grey patina and blend beautifully into its surroundings.

One of the attractions of teak outdoor furniture is that there is very little maintenance required. We suggest washing the furniture annually, preferably in the spring, using soapy water to remove any build-up of dirt.

Hose pipes at normal water pressure can be used but avoid high pressure water as this could affect joints and open up the structure of the wood. You may find that small surface cracks / checks appear in the wood, particularly on the end grain.

This is primarily due to changes in the moisture content of the wood and will fluctuate with the seasonal variations in relative humidity and ambient moisture levels. This is perfectly natural and will not affect the strength or durability of the furniture.

Winter care

We recommend that chairs and tables with moving parts be stored in an unheated shed or garage over winter. Should this not be possible we suggest covering them during the winter months.

Fixed tables, chairs and benches can be left uncovered throughout the winter to weather naturally. If desired they can be covered in order to slow down the weathering process.

When using covers it is important to choose
a fabric that allows the air to circulate. A lack of air circulation can lead to a build-up of condensation between the cover and the surface of the wood, creating a microclimate that allows mildew or other fungal blooms to develop.

Brassware & fittings

We recommend that all moving parts are checked for tightness at regular intervals. The process of folding and unfolding chairs can, over a period of time, loosen fittings.

Please note that brassware will patinate / tarnish in the open air over time.

Should I use teak oil on my teak furniture?

We strongly recommend against using teak oil
as this can destroy teak’s naturally occurring protective oils, making it dependent on continuous applications to stop it from drying out. Teak oil is more likely to encourage mildew growth and black spots, and will colour unevenly as it ages.

Warranty

We warrant our teak furniture for one year against manufacturing defects. Under this warranty we are unable to exchange goods that have been treated, painted or modified in any way. In these cases we would repair any defect covered under the warranty.

Can I keep my furniture outside all year?

Teak is ideal for outdoor furniture as it’s strong, durable, weatherproof and easy to maintain due to its tight grain and naturally present, protective oils.

During the winter months outdoor furniture is more prone to weathering than during the spring and summer. If winter storage is preferred we recommend an outhouse, garage or garden shed.

Please ensure that there is not a dramatic change in the heat and humidity of the ambient environment (such as central heating or storage in a conservatory or greenhouse) as this may cause your furniture to develop cracks or warp.
